SINGAPORE: A new app for drivers that enables automatic deductions when they exit commercial car parks was launched on Wednesday (Jul 17) by payment solutions provider AXS.

Called AXS Drive, the app aims to reduce problems such as drivers being stuck at exit gantries due to issues with the electronic parking system or insufficient funds.

The app links a driver’s credit or debit card to their licence plate and in-vehicle unit (IU) number.

It uses a licence plate recognition system to record a vehicle's entry and exit times. Parking fees are then deducted from the registered card.

In response to a question about what would happen if the registered debit card has insufficient funds, AXS Payments CEO Quah Chun Han said the gantry would still open but notifications will be sent to the user to settle the outstanding fee within a certain period of time.

If the user fails to settle the balance within the given timeframe, their account will be blocked until the fee has been settled, said Mr Quah.

Currently, the app can be used at 12 car parks. They are:

  • The Heeren
  • Singapore Shopping Centre
  • Far East Plaza
  • GB Building
  • Frontier
  • Wisma Atria
  • E!Hub
  • Begonia Carpark
  • Aranda Country Club
  • D'Resort
  • Southside @ 80 Siloso Road
  • ABI Plaza

AXS is targeting to expand this to 100 car parks by the end of this year. This will account for an estimated 12 per cent of the market share of the commercial car park segment, it added.

AXS Drive, which is available in Android and iOS for free, currently only accepts Mastercard due to a one-year exclusive arrangement with the payment network.

This will be expanded to include other credit card payment options, said AXS.

Other features include a scanner for complimentary parking vouchers, a parking space availability checker as well as real-time updates on traffic conditions.

Through the app, users will also be able to manage common motoring service payments, such as road tax renewals and fine payments.
