SINGAPORE — An alleged serial housebreaker was today (June 3) charged with a series of house trespasses and thefts around Whitley Road, Moulmein Road and the Yio Chu Kang area.
Mohd Nor Aszrol Kamaruddin, a 24-year-old Malaysian, is accused of seven counts of housebreaking by night and two counts of trespassing. He intends to plead guilty.
The court heard that Mohd Nor’s alleged offences were committed on seven occasions in April this year and October/November 2013. All but one of these alleged offences were committed between 9pm and 3am.
Court documents showed that he would climb to the second or third floor of the landed dwellings and attempt to gain entry via balcony doors.
On six of the alleged occasions, of which three took place this year, Mohd Nor successfully gained entry into the houses and stole items — including eight smartphones — and cash amounting to S$11,940.
He sold some of the gadgets in Johor, and only S$748 was recovered from him, the court was told. Mohd Nor will appear in court again on June 17, when he is expected to plead guilty.
For each charge of housebreaking by night and theft, he faces up to 14 years in jail and a fine. For trespassing into houses, he could be jailed seven years and/or fined.
