SINGAPORE — A 25-year-old man was hauled to court on Wednesday (Dec 14) for allegedly throwing a cat from the sixth floor of a public housing block and then bashing it to death.
Fajar Ashraf Fajar Ali, who was charged with two counts of animal cruelty, told a district court that he intends to plead guilty.
The court heard that at about 1.40am on May 26, Fajar Ashraf allegedly flung a female short-haired cat from the sixth floor of Block 884, Tampines Street 83. He is also accused of slamming the cat on the ground twice, about an hour later.
The cat was reportedly found "shrieking in agony" and "with blood oozing from its mouth".
The Cat Welfare Society reported, in a Facebook post after the incident, that the cat was also burned with a lighter.
The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore was alerted to the incident and conducted a post-mortem examination on the same day.
The accused, who works as a supervisor in a bar, will next appear in court on Jan 9.
If found guilty, he could be jailed up to 18 months and/or fined up to S$15,000 for each of his charges.
