Man who threatened to throw egg at Shanmugam given 12-month conditional warning: Police
The police have issued an advisory to a 48-year-old Singaporean man who provided information on where Mr K Shanmugam (pictured) would be.
SINGAPORE — A 21-year-old Singaporean man has received a 12-month conditional warning after he commented on Facebook in March last year that he wanted to throw an egg at Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam, the police said.
In a media statement on Wednesday (March 11), the police said that they also issued an advisory to a 48-year-old Singaporean man who provided information on where Mr Shanmugam would be, in a reply to the first man’s comment.
The 21-year-old was arrested for consumption and possession of cannabis and drug-taking utensils in 2017 and served a 12-month sentence in the Singapore Armed Forces' Detention Barracks, the police said.
While investigations into the Facebook comment were ongoing last year, the man committed more drug offences for abuse of new psychoactive substances.
He was convicted of his latest drug offences and is now serving a three-year sentence in prison.
The police added that they take threats seriously, referring to a case in 2018 where a man with a history of drug abuse physically assaulted Dr Tan Wu Meng, Member of Parliament for Jurong Group Representation Constituency during a Meet-the-People session.
The assailant had grabbed Dr Tan in a chokehold, slammed his head and back against a wall and yanked him into a kneeling posture on the ground before punching and kicking him.
The attacker was later arrested and sentenced to three months’ jail.
