MCCY to distribute free national flags to households as part of community initiative
Every Singaporean household may display the national flag from now until Sept 30, 2020.
SINGAPORE — Singaporeans and permanent residents who have been unable to get a national flag for display at home during the Covid-19 crisis may now register for a free flag to be mailed to them.
The flags will be distributed by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) as part of a community initiative in the run-up to National Day on Aug 9.
Households are allowed to display the national flag from now until Sept 30, which is when the period marking the National Day celebrations ends.
"Flying our flag is an act of solidarity," the ministry wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday (May 27), noting that some people are keen to display the flag but have been unable to get one.
MCCY said last month that it had received requests from members of the public who wanted to fly the national flag "as a demonstration of unity and solidarity” during the stay-home period of the circuit breaker, which ends on June 1.
Rules governing the display of the national flag were amended to allow people to display it without a flagpole and illumination from April 25 to Sept 30.
The free flags are subject to availability and are limited to one for each household, MCCY said, though more will be made available during the National Day celebrations period.
