SINGAPORE: About 300,000 Pioneer Generation seniors will receive MediSave top-ups amounting to a total of more than S$150 million (US$111 million) next month, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) said on Friday (Jun 7).

The MediSave top-ups are provided in addition to the annual GST Voucher-MediSave top-ups given to eligible Singaporeans aged 65 and above.

MediSave can be used to pay the premiums for MediShield Life, CareShield Life, ElderShield and other MediSave-approved insurance plans, as well as medical expenses such as hospitalisation, day surgeries and selected outpatient treatments.

Eligible Pioneer Generation seniors receive top-ups of S$250 to S$900 each year, said MOF.

But older seniors - aged 85 years and above in 2024 - who have serious pre-existing conditions will receive further top-ups of S$50 to S$200 per year from 2021 to 2025 to help pay their MediShield Life premiums, the Finance Ministry added.

Additional MediSave top-ups were first announced in 2020 to help keep MediShield Life premiums affordable for those from the Pioneer Generation, who generally accumulated less MediSave than younger Singaporeans.

“Together with the special premium subsidies, these annual MediSave top-ups will continue to support the affordability of MediShield Life premiums for all Pioneers,” said MOF.

“Older Pioneers aged 90 and above in 2024 will continue to see their MediShield Life premiums fully covered. Younger Pioneers will have about two-thirds of their MediShield Life premiums covered.”

Pioneer Generation seniors who have downloaded and completed their one-time set-up on the Singpass application will receive the top-up notifications in their app inbox by Jun 11, informing them of the amount they would be eligible for.

Those who have not set up their Singpass app, but have registered their mobile numbers with Singpass before Jun 9, will receive an SMS by Jun 11 notifying them of the amount. The rest will receive letters by end-June.

To protect seniors from scams, the SMS notification, which would be sent by “MOF”, will only inform eligible seniors of their benefits. They will not be asked to reply to the SMS or provide any information to the sender.

No messages on the Pioneer Generation Package will be sent via WhatsApp or other mobile app messaging platforms, said MOF.

More information on the packages can be found at go.gov.sg/pgpackage.
