SINGAPORE — Sixty more primary schools are offering the school-based Dyslexia Remediation Programme this year, announced the Ministry of Education today (March 2), meaning 121, or two-thirds of the primary schools here will be covered.
By next year, all primary schools will offer the two-year intervention initiative for Primary 3 and 4 students.
With the expansion this year, 290 more children are attending the programme. This is in addition to the 1,510 students who have benefited from the programmes since 2012.
The programme takes place four times a week, outside school curriculum hours. Each session lasts 45 minutes and will teach students letter names, letter sounds as well as how to use other senses to read text.
About 13,000 primary, secondary and junior college students from mainstream schools — or 2.7 per cent of the student population — have special needs or learning difficulties. Among them, children with dyslexia form the largest group.
