SINGAPORE: When he was invited to enter politics in his late thirties, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong did not expect to one day be asked to serve as the next Prime Minister, he said in a video posted on social media on Monday (Apr 15).

“I agreed (in 2011) because I wanted to contribute to the Singapore story,” said Mr Wong, now 51.

The post came shortly after it was announced that Mr Wong, who is also the Minister for Finance, will take over the reins from PM Lee Hsien Loong on May 15.

Mr Wong will become the fourth Prime Minister of Singapore. He was named two years ago as the leader of the ruling People’s Action Party's (PAP) fourth-generation team.

“I accept this responsibility with humility and a deep sense of duty. I pledge to give my all in this undertaking,” he said in the video, which lasted about a minute and a half.

“Every ounce of my energy shall be devoted to the service of our country and our people. Your dreams will inspire my actions. Your concerns will guide my decisions.”

He called on Singaporeans to share their ideas, passions and dreams, and work with his team in the journey forward.

“Together we can build a future that shines brightly for all Singaporeans,” he said.

He asked for Singaporeans’ trust, support and continued faith in pursuing the shared vision of the country.

“As one united people regardless of race, language or religion, we will build a democratic society based on justice and equality,” said Mr Wong.

“Let us move forward as one Team Singapore and write the next chapter of our Singapore story together.”
