India and Australia have finalised a uranium supply deal after years of deliberation. The agreement was confirmed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Melbourne. He hailed the deal as an important step in securing India's strategic security, and said Australia's huge uranium reserves were critical to New Delhi's energy plans. Australia had previously been concerned that the fuel could be used for nuclear weapons. Australian premier Anthony Albanese also announced the signing of a joint declaration to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation.
