Adjournment motion on building a democracy of deeds
Residents take the responsibility to solve problems, use their imagination to create shared spaces and show the maturity to reach consensus through dialogue. This is democracy of deeds at work in Tanjong Pagar-Tiong Bahru, highlighted by MP Foo Cexiang. In an adjournment motion in parliament on Tuesday (May 5), he said such initiatives can have a catalytic effect. He proposed converting state properties such as former schools to serve as community regeneration stations, and enhancing Neighbourhood Renewal Programmes to include Participatory Budgeting so that residents can propose and vote for their own ideas. Responding, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Culture, Community and Youth Goh Hanyan said the government is on a “journey to learn how to step back so that citizens can step forward”. It is deepening citizen participation, expanding volunteerism and enabling citizen-led initiatives, she added.
