Alvin Tan on calibrating Singapore's energy mix

11:02 Min

Many of the advanced new technologies in energy are still in the research and development phase and have not begun commercial operations yet. So Singapore will need to consider any decision to deploy new energy technologies from sources such as geothermal and nuclear based on safety, reliability, affordability and environmental sustainability. They must meet Singapore's stringent standards of critical infrastructure and resilience, in line with international best practices. Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan, who said this in reply to MPs' questions in Parliament on Monday (Apr 4), stressed that Singapore's future energy mix will depend on advancements in low-carbon technologies, as well as through collaborations and trading of low-carbon energy across borders. He said the Government will calibrate its plans, enhance energy efficiency across all sectors and encourage consumers to play their part to conserve energy.
