Andre Low on Info-communications Media Development Authority (Amendment) Bill
The Workers’ Party does not dispute the administrative case for the Info-communications Media Development Authority (Amendment) Bill, said NCMP Andre Low. The Infocomm Media Development Authority already regulates the media and telecommunications sectors, and drawing on a common framework across both is defensible on efficiency and harmonisation grounds, he said. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday (May 6), he raised concerns that the bill is written to foreclose the future before it has the chance to arrive - where genuinely independent media may grow in reach and maturity. He urged the government to give the assurance that the bill is intended to build the regulatory architecture to make a future of independent and trusted journalism more reachable.
