Ladakh under curfew after statehood protests leave at least five dead

04:31 Min

An uneasy calm in India's remote Himalayan region of Ladakh, after yesterday's violent protests. At least five people were reportedly killed and dozens more injured. A curfew is in place, with hundreds of police officers and paramilitary soldiers deployed on the streets. Protesters had been demanding statehood and job quotas for local residents. Residents said the police fired bullets and tear gas, which India's Home Ministry said were carried out in "self defence". Ladakh lost its autonomy in 2019, when it was carved out of Jammu and Kashmir. It's now under the direct administration of New Delhi. Rebecca Bundhun reports from Mumbai.
