Baey Yam Keng on fire hydrant inspections
PUB and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) conduct periodic checks on all public fire hydrants in Singapore. PUB does this as part of the broader inspection and maintenance regime for the entire water supply network, which takes around four years to complete. It checks for obstructions that could impede operations, signs of corrosion or leaks, and to ensure that the valve pit is free from debris. SCDF conducts annual public serviceability tests on all the hydrants. This involves function checks including removal of the valve pit cover followed by measurement of water flow and pressure. When defects are found, they are rectified. The frequency of checks is sufficient to ensure that fire hydrants function effectively. These details were given by Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and the Environment Baey Yam Keng in Parliament on Thursday (Feb 23) in response to an MP’s questions.
