Budget 2022 debate: Louis Ng on support for social workers at family service centres
Set a cap on the number of cases that social workers can take on, and increase the time, resources and headcount available for community work and research work. MP Louis Ng made these suggestions in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 1) to ease the workload and pressure on social workers at family service centres (FSCs). He cited a study which found that social workers in FSCs faced higher depression rates at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The centres were often the first port of call for those in need and seen as a “clearing house” for all social services. Mr Ng called on the Ministry of Social and Family Development to work with FSCs to implement his suggestions and not treat them as mere guidelines.
