Budget 2022 debate: Pritam Singh on renewing the social compact and objection to GST hike

29:52 Min

The Workers’ Party (WP) supports the stated goal of Budget 2022 to create a fairer, more sustainable and more inclusive society, and believes it offers broad-based assistance to address the concerns of individuals and businesses. However, WP will object to the Budget as it disagrees with the decision to raise the Goods and Services Tax (GST), said Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh in Parliament on Monday (Feb 28). He said WP’s position is that the Government need not raise the GST, especially at this time, as there are other options for raising revenue. Mr Singh called on the Government to lay out its revenue and expenditure projections for the rest of the decade so that the necessity of the GST hike can be determined. He also repeated WP’s call to tweak the framework of the reserves and how they contribute to the Budget.
