Budget 2023 debate: Mohd Fahmi Aliman on support for lower- and middle-income workers

13:19 Min

There is room to better address the needs of middle-income workers in Singapore, said MP Mohd Fahmi Aliman in Parliament on Thursday (Feb 23). He urged the Government to expand the eligibility criteria for subsidies and increase payouts for workers with dependents. He also gave suggestions to further improve the liquidity of middle-income earners to provide them with more support to cope with rising prices. He noted that the Progressive Wage Model has been rolled out to more sectors over the years and will cover 135,000 full-time lower-wage workers, representing almost half of the total number of lower-wage workers in Singapore. He also urged the Government to continually review the Local Qualifying Salary for workers to ensure the wages keep pace with wage convergence targets for lower-wage workers.
