Debate on President’s speech: David Hoe on realising different definitions of success
As Singapore looks to embrace wider definitions of success, it must also establish the building blocks to help every person realise their own definition of success, said MP David Hoe. He proposed "Curiosity Credits" - like SkillsFuture for the young - to give children a structured but flexible way to explore opportunities in fields ranging from arts to sports to technology. This could bridge opportunity gaps early, ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has the foundation to shape their own definition of success, he said. He also urged the Ministry of Education to consider broadening entry pathways to secondary school by moving beyond a single examination, the PSLE. Mr Hoe added that there is a need to make disciplinary action for bullying more purposeful and effective, as well as create youth-appropriate channels for reporting on vaping. He spoke in parliament on Thursday (Sep 25).
