Budget 2023 debate: Sharael Taha on fiscally sustainable Government support
Budget 2023 has elements which attempt to address the challenges and issues that weigh heavily on everyone's minds within the constraints of limited resources, said MP Sharael Taha. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 22), he said the Budget reinforces action for society to support each other, with the less well-off receiving more. But he highlighted concerns that the level of support, where there is something for everyone, for the current inflationary cost of living pressures may be perceived as the norm in the future. He believes that while this level of support is necessary in the current environment, it must be monitored closely in future budgets. The amount and qualifying conditions must be carefully calibrated as the situation changes to avoid entrenching the sense of reliance on Government support, as it is not fiscally sustainable in the long term, he said.
