Debate on President’s speech: David Neo on enabling youth to build bonds through sports and arts
Young people will be the architects of a more cohesive Singapore; yet, while they are the most digitally connected generation in history, they risk becoming the most socially disconnected in the real world. Making this point in parliament on Thursday (Sep 25), Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth David Neo said the Government will work to build more bonds among youth through “the universal language” of sports and arts. For a start, a new School Sports Fiesta will be piloted next month, beginning with 16 schools across three clusters at primary and secondary levels. This will get youth from different schools and backgrounds to play together. More will be done to make the arts another platform to unite young Singaporeans, especially in multicultural art forms. And as Singapore broadens its definitions of success, the Government wants to recognise young athletes who are breaking new ground. It is more than doubling the number of sports eligible for the Singapore School Sports Colours Award, which honours students for sporting achievements. Those who represent Singapore in diving, tchoukball, sport climbing and 33 other additional sports are now eligible for the award.
