Budget 2023 debate: Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim on alternative tax revenue streams and support for young families

14:26 Min

A capital gains tax for properties such as HDB flats that have been sold at a huge profit, and a “windfall tax” on companies that have benefited enormously from a particular situation - these were suggested as possible ways to expand Singapore’s tax base by MP Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 22). He also highlighted the importance of giving young couples who want to start a family the best opportunity to meet their housing needs. Mr Zhulkarnain suggested further refining the BTO balloting system based on needs and types of applicants. He also proposed allowing the Child Development Account to be used to pay for essential items such as baby formula or diapers, to ease the financial burden on families.
