Chan Chun Sing on safeguards against misuse of AI technology by students

09:01 Min

The Ministry of Education (MOE) provides educators in the schools and Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) with guidance and resources to effectively harness Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to enhance learning, said Education Minister Chan Chun Sing. There are also professional discussion groups among educators to explore its use in the education setting. At the same time, educators teach students to understand fundamental concepts and guide them against developing an over-reliance on technological tools. Mr Chan said in a more uncertain world, Singapore must teach its students to embrace and learn to work with tools in the new normal that have a range of outcomes. This will extend to Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, whose use will be more pervasive. Educators will help students understand how AI tools like ChatGPT work. Students need to be discerning and critically assess the output for accuracy and objectivity. They are also taught the importance of integrity, as well as the need to guard against the harmful impact and consequences of plagiarism. Mr Chan outlined these safeguards in reply to MPs' questions in Parliament on Monday (Feb 6). He said the schools and IHLs will continue to equip students with digital competencies and values to enable them to harness technology confidently and responsibly.
