Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 2: Melvin Yong on protection for consumers
Empower the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore to impose financial penalties on errant businesses without first obtaining an injunction order from the courts. Allow the courts to mandate errant businesses to compensate affected consumers during the injunction application process. Include beauty-related contracts in the list of regulated contracts. MP Melvin Yong offered these suggestions to strengthen the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act in Parliament on Thursday (Mar 3). He said that efforts to help consumers alleviate the rising cost of living will be in vain if Singapore fails to clamp down on "unscrupulous" businesses which take advantage of the inflationary environment and engage in unfair practices.
