Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 4: Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap on PSLE benchmark for madrasahs
Review the necessity of the PSLE benchmark for madrasahs, MP Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap urged the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Parliament on Monday (Mar 7). He said in 2003, MOE implemented a minimum benchmark for madrasah students to attain a PSLE aggregate score higher than the average of Malay students in the six lowest-performing primary schools. Madrasahs which fail to meet the benchmark cannot take in new students for three years and may find it hard to continue operating. Mr Faisal called on MOE to drop or ease the benchmark. For madrasahs that fail to meet the standard, he suggested MOE issue a warning and require the madrasah to conduct an independent audit of its practices.
