Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 6: Leon Perera on expanding ‘community shop’ concept

01:24 Min

The COVID-pandemic has exacerbated food insecurity among low-income families and while food distribution drives do important work, they may be fragmented and lead to food wastage, said MP Leon Perera in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 9). He called on the Government to coordinate food aid by expanding the “community shop” concept to public rental blocks and pockets where low-income families live islandwide. Community shops allow needy households to "choose some groceries every month for free" from special mini-marts run by a charity organisation. This means they can pick what they need instead of getting standard food packages.
