Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 5: Chong Kee Hiong on public rental flats, fire in HDB flats and building HDB flats faster

05:20 Min

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) should invest more resources to build flats faster to make up for the time lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic, said MP Chong Kee Hiong. Speaking in Parliament on Thursday (Mar 2), he said it is vital to shorten the waiting time for Build-to-Order flats. He urged HDB to continue to work with the construction sector to use new and faster building techniques to reduce the time needed to complete the projects. This will alleviate supply and demand pressures and moderate price increases, he said. Mr Chong also asked for an update on HDB’s public rental schemes. He also wanted to know if the Government would consider a more targeted public education programme to increase awareness on fire safety and prevention.
