Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 5: Leon Perera on illegal wildlife trade and animal cruelty

02:03 Min

Singapore should step up efforts to tackle the illegal wildlife trade, to better reflect its role as a globally important transport node. Issuing that call in Parliament on Thursday (Mar 2), MP Leon Perera supported a previous suggestion by MP Louis Ng that wildlife trafficking be classified as a serious offence under the Organised Crime Act. Mr Perera also asked if the authorities engage practitioners of traditional medicine to encourage them to highlight the negative impact of consuming endangered animal products to potential customers. Separately, Mr Perera said current punishments for animal cruelty in Singapore are too lax. He called on NParks to expedite its ongoing review of these penalties. He also suggested taking a “complementary restorative approach”, such as by requiring abusers to attend follow-ups with psychologists.
