Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 5: Murali Pillai on strengthening inclusivity in public housing
Singapore’s public housing plays an important role in the development of its people, especially young children from less privileged backgrounds. MP Murali Pillai, who highlighted this in Parliament on Thursday (Mar 2), made two suggestions to strengthen this role. He called for the resolution of the information asymmetry between the courts, HDB and divorcing couples on the issue of ensuring proper housing arrangements for their young children post-divorce. He also urged the Government to “decisively tackle” overcrowding in rental flats, and look into the plight of seniors who sell their flats to help fund the purchase of flats belonging to their children, relatives or friends, only to be turfed out later.
