Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 2: Derrick Goh on fighting scams effectively in the digital age
Singapore authorities must be more proactive and responsive in tackling new, exploitative types of scams, said MP Derrick Goh in Parliament on Thursday (Feb 29). These scams, such as job, e-commerce and “fake friend” scams, exploit victim's psychology to make them part with their money and account for the majority of cases and biggest losses. Mr Goh raised three questions. First, given the success of the Anti-Scam Command in working with banks to fight phishing scams, could similar partnerships be established with platform companies such as Meta and Carousell to swiftly disrupt and investigate tainted e-commerce and messaging accounts? Second, how can the authorities better leverage trends and insights to pre-empt exploitative scams - for example, foreseeing ticket scams related to a high-demand concert? Third, how will the police and other agencies be further equipped to deal with scams involving new technologies such as AI?
