Despite their invaluable contributions, hawkerpreneurs face escalating challenges - higher manpower costs, rising ingredients costs and escalating rental prices, said MP Edward Chia. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Mar 4), he said it is imperative to consider the well-being and livelihoods of hawkerpreneurs. He wanted to know if the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) has conducted a study on the average earnings of hawkers; specifically, a study on younger hawkers who face higher living expenses would be beneficial. He wanted to know what plans MSE has to ensure that hawkerpreneurs can maintain a decent livelihood, as well as assist them in implementing price increases that are fair to them and consumers.
