Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 4: Melvin Yong on autonomous bus deployment

00:55 Min

Earlier this year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) had sought proposals to trial autonomous buses and evaluate the feasibility of using autonomous vehicle technology for public bus services. To that, MP Melvin Yong asked the Ministry of Transport to provide an update on the deployment of autonomous buses for revenue service and the implementation roadmap. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday (Mar 5), he wanted to know how many public transport workers, in particular bus captains and bus technicians, will be affected by the rollout of autonomous buses on the roads. He also asked about the ministry's plans to ensure that the affected public transport workers are suitably upskilled, reskilled and redeployed.
