Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 5: Patrick Tay on review of Employment Act

01:45 Min

In parliament on Thursday (Mar 6), MP Patrick Tay stated that the last review and amendment of the Employment Act was in 2019, noting that a review is overdue. He called for the Ministry of Manpower to embark on a review of the Employment Act with tripartite partners, pointing out three areas in need of a review, including the provision on dismissals under Section 14 of the Act. Highlighting that employers can currently terminate employees without giving reasons for the termination, he called for employers to be made to give reasons for termination or discontinuation of employment explicitly in all cases of cessation of employment initiated by the employer.
