Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 6: Sylvia Lim on maternity fees for mothers of Singapore citizens

02:14 Min

The cost of delivering a baby in Singapore differs widely by maternal nationality, with non-citizen mothers married to Singaporean fathers paying a much higher sum than citizen mothers, said MP Sylvia Lim in parliament on Friday (Mar 7). She said it is counterproductive to impose such steep delivery fees on foreign mothers as their children are Singaporean by birth. She requested the Ministry of Health to review these cost differentials as families with a citizen father and foreign mother have the lowest household income compared to citizen-couple families.
