Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 7: Eric Chua on building an inclusive Singapore

28:26 Min

The government will ensure that Singapore continues to be a place where all families thrive, including lower-income and vulnerable families and those with family members with disabilities, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Social and Family Development Eric Chua. Outlining the “way forward” in parliament on Monday (Mar 10), Mr Chua stressed the need to journey with low-income families towards stability, self-reliance and social mobility. This is why the government is enhancing its social safety net through ComLink+, which is now supporting around 10,000 families. It has been launched for preschool and employment, and will cover debt clearance and home ownership in the coming months. The government will weave health and social support together, with family coaches to provide guidance on healthier lifestyles and access to services, as well as develop and implement action plans to better pursue life goals. The government will also step up efforts to help families which aspire to buy their own flats. It is partnering with HDB on home ownership planning and guidance and opening more pathways to home ownership. Turning to vulnerable families facing social and emotional challenges, the government is looking to serve them in a comprehensive, coordinated and convenient way instead of them being “bounced around” multiple services. Mr Chua also outlined plans to help people with disabilities find jobs and live independently in the community - through home support and enabled living programmes. He stressed the need for everyone to play a part, as extending a helping hand creates a society of opportunities and hope where all are empowered to realise their aspirations.
