Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 3: Gerald Giam on Physical Education time in schools

01:58 Min

Increase minimum Physical Education (PE) time in primary schools to five hours a week, up from two to two-and-a-half hours now. MP Gerald Giam made this suggestion in parliament on Monday (Mar 2). He said children need more physical activity than they are getting, especially as they spend more time in sedentary digital engagement. Physical fitness also improves academic performance and cognitive focus. Mr Giam added that PE teachers could be supplemented by qualified coaches and even subject-based teachers conducting movement-based lessons. He also offered proposals to address space constraints.
