Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 4: Louis Chua on improving hawker food affordability
Although many Singaporeans feel the pinch of rising hawker food prices, it is unfair for hawkers to shoulder the direct responsibility for providing affordable meals, said MP Louis Chua in parliament on Tuesday (Mar 3), where he reiterated his suggestion for the government to provide discounts for lower-income Singaporeans based on their CHAS card type. He noted that by enhancing governmental support to ensure affordable meals while securing the livelihoods of hawkers, younger players could enter and rejuvenate the hawker scene.
