Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 6: Sylvia Lim on strengthening Lasting Power of Attorney regime
On Thursday (Mar 5), MP Sylvia Lim highlighted two groups of people whom she said may not be benefiting from the Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) regime - those without any relatives or friends to appoint and low-wage foreign workers. She called for the government to consider enabling a donor to appoint the Public Guardian or the Public Trustee as donee, so that the appointment can withstand the passage of time. She added that the issue low-wage foreign workers face is the high cost of registration of LPAs for foreigners and suggested making it practical for them to make their LPAs, either without charge or at a nominal fee.
