Debate on President’s Address: Ang Wei Neng on ensuring support for needy keeps pace with inflation
Government support for low-income families must keep pace with inflation, which is set to be the norm for quite some time, said MP Ang Wei Neng in Parliament on Monday (Apr 17). He said there is scope to increase the qualifying criteria for help schemes across the board. In fact, he suggested that all assistance schemes include an inflation component so that both the qualifying criteria and quantum of assistance can be adjusted annually in tandem with inflation. Mr Ang noted that the amount being spent on ComCare represents about 0.6 per cent of Singapore’s 2023 Budget or 0.1 per cent of the country’s GDP. He compared this to South Korea, which is spending three per cent of GDP on cash benefits for public social expenditure.
