Debate on President’s Address: Lee Hsien Loong on what Singapore can do to survive and thrive in an increasingly troubled world

52:28 Min

Singapore faces a global situation - both strategic and economic - that is “graver than (it has) experienced for a very long time”, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in Parliament on Wednesday (Apr 19). Indeed, he said the situation is “unprecedented” - a confluence of not one but several storms. He identified three big ones - a hot war in Europe; deepening hostility between two superpowers, the US and China, which are closely interlinked; and protectionism undermining the foundations of the multilateral trading system. These simultaneous crises, he said, will set in motion a series of changes and shocks that will severely disrupt the world, this region and Singapore. In such a troubled environment, Mr Lee urged Singaporeans to remain united against new stresses and strains, retain a go-getting spirit of self-reliance and enterprise, and uphold Singapore’s good reputation and standing in the world. He said the quality of a country’s Government and leaders matters too. He called on Singaporeans to give Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and the 4G ministers their fullest support to make the leadership renewal a success and ensure Singapore has the best chance to keep its system working well.
