Debate on President’s Address: Louis Chua on income security and meeting diverse housing needs
With intensifying risks to Singapore’s economy and labour market, there is an urgent need to create a redundancy insurance scheme - perhaps by exploring how arrangements for the COVID-19 Recovery Grant can be adapted. MP Louis Chua said this in Parliament on Wednesday (Apr 19). He also reiterated his previous call for the Government to expand the availability of rental housing and lower the eligibility age for Build-to-Order flats for singles from 35 to 28. He asked for an update on the Government’s plans for the Voluntary Early Redevelopment Scheme and addressing the end of 99-year public housing leases. He wanted to know how it will ensure that flats remain affordable, while also remaining a good nest egg. Finally, Mr Chua said he hoped the Government will avoid implementing an “untimely” second round of the GST hike, especially if wage growth remains uneven or weak.
