Debate on President’s Address: Patrick Tay on tapping the SkillsFuture ‘toolbox’
More can be done to ensure that SkillsFuture, which supports lifelong learning, works for individual Singaporeans, said MP Patrick Tay in Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 18). He pointed out that not all open this “toolbox”, much less use it, for two reasons - first, there are just too many options for training programmes; second, there is a perceived lack of guarantee that undergoing training will result in tangible outcomes for a person’s career in terms of wages and progression. Mr Tay said a more individualised and speed-to-market approach is needed and this is where career coaches can “make a world of difference”. He proposed industry-led accreditation of career coaches and counsellors, and expanding the use of SkillsFuture Credits to include the engaging of professional career coaches and counsellors. Mr Tay said in the long term, this could benefit not just Singaporeans in their careers but ultimately, Singapore’s economy as a whole by reducing the mismatch between skills and jobs.
