Debate on President’s Address: Vikram Nair on importance of education

Singapore is now a developed nation and continuing to be a growing, high-income country is not easy. With higher incomes, the cost of living is also generally higher. Making these points in Parliament on Monday (Apr 17), MP Vikram Nair said it is vital that Singaporeans have opportunities to train and get better jobs throughout their working lives. He suggested that income support be provided during training. He also said schools must remain the great leveller for education. Mr Nair called for preschool to be made compulsory and for the education system to place less emphasis on tuition so that children who cannot afford it do not get left behind.
