Debate on President’s Address: Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim on social trust and cohesion

13:47 Min

Singapore faces an important challenge to ensure that there is continued trust between the political leadership and the public, and among all Singaporeans. This does not mean being monolithic in its views, but rather - recognising that “iron sharpens iron”- rigorously debating ideas to find new ways forward for the nation. One example is the Forward Singapore conversations, which allow the Government to tap people’s strengths and expertise. MP Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim said this in Parliament on Monday (Apr 17). He also said Singapore needs to maintain cohesion to guard against threats and external forces that may seek to divide the country and undermine trust in its institutions. Internally, he urged Singaporeans to stay committed to an open but multiracial and multi-religious society, and avoid stratification into haves and have-nots.
