Debate on President’s speech: Mariam Jaafar on 3 pathways to break 'cycle of disadvantage'
When we speak of social mobility or inequality, we often talk about wages, jobs, housing, even cars but we talk less about how social economic backgrounds also shape health, education and opportunity across a lifetime, said MP Mariam Jaafar. What we need are not more piecemeal programmes but “joined-up longitudinal pathways” that follow a family through an extended period that ensure that no child, parent or senior falls through the cracks, she said in parliament on Tuesday (Sep 23). She proposed three pathways - in education, health and career - all linked together with ComLink+ to close the gaps and break the “cycle of disadvantage”.
