Desmond Choo on Law Enforcement and Other Matters Bill
For proposed new offences targeting the use of local SIM cards for scams, there should be minimum fines and jail terms for individual offenders and fines tied to a percentage of annual revenue for retailers, said MP Desmond Choo in Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 2). He also asked how the authorities intend to work with platforms such as Telegram or Carousell to stamp out sales of such SIM cards. On proposed amendments empowering the police to handle mental health-related incidents, Mr Choo raised concern about officers making “hasty” assessments that could lead to wrongful apprehension. He suggested that the Ministry of Home Affairs partner the mental health community to train officers.
