Many items that can be used as offensive weapons, such as knives, also have common everyday uses, so the authorities have to be practical and not over-regulate them, said Minister of State for Home Affairs Desmond Tan in Parliament on Monday (Apr 4). He was replying to MPs’ questions on recent knife- and sword-related crimes. Mr Tan noted that new laws regulating a wider range of potentially dangerous items will take effect this year. He added that the number of knife-related crimes has stayed relatively constant over the past five years, averaging about 150 cases annually.
