Gan Siow Huang on eligibility to hire migrant domestic workers
Over the past five years, an average of about 2,000 cases, or about one per cent of all the applications to hire migrant domestic workers (MDWs), were rejected each year. Minister of State for Manpower Gan Siow Huang, who gave this update in reply to an MP’s questions in Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 5), said an applicant’s eligibility to employ an MDW is based on various factors. These include the income of the prospective employer, the ability to provide proper and safe accommodation, as well as the caregiving needs of the household. In assessing renewal applications, the Ministry of Manpower also considers the track records of the employers, such as whether they have previously defaulted on salary or levy payment.
