Gan Siow Huang on graduate employment outcomes
The employment rates for Singaporeans aged 25 to 29 have remained broadly stable over the decade, suggesting that Singapore's graduates do not have prolonged unemployment. While there are fluctuations in sectoral employment rates, these are to be expected given the cyclical nature of the economy and the labour market. Minister of State for Education Gan Siow Huang made these points in parliament on Friday (Mar 7) in response to MPs’ questions on the Graduate Employment Survey (GES) and whether there were structural issues with more graduates taking longer to find full-time jobs. She stressed that the GES only provides a six-month snapshot of the employment situation post-graduation. Education Minister Chan Chun Sing added that the more important point is to produce graduates, whether in the polytechnic or university, to have the right skillsets that are required by the market and allow them to secure good jobs with a good starting pay and good trajectory.
