Gan Siow Huang on primary school students needing mental health support
The number of primary school students referred to counsellors for mental health support has been stable for the last five years. The figure last year was about 16 per 1,000 students. This was revealed in Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 5) by Minister of State for Education Gan Siow Huang, in response to MPs’ questions. She said some students continue to need support beyond primary school. Counsellors engage the parents to discuss this and obtain their consent to share relevant information, such as the child’s challenges and strategies for coping, with his or her new school on a need-to-know basis.
