Hany Soh on supporting Singaporeans in starting and raising families

26:24 Min

Young Singaporeans face various challenges that may hold them back from starting and raising a family. These range from finding the right partner, to getting their first home, to the anxiety and costs of preparing to have children. MP Hany Soh outlined these concerns in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 5). She was moving a motion for the House to call for the continued review and updating of policies to better support families and Singaporeans’ marriage and parenthood aspirations, and to endorse a whole-of-society approach to building a Singapore “made for families”. Ms Soh suggested that the Government create a solution such as an app to cater to the growing popularity of online dating, review measures to ease the high Cash Over Valuation of buying a resale HDB flat or allow housing loans or CPF savings to be used to pay for this, allow families to seek a lower and/or deferred housing loan repayment rate from HDB for the first few years after a child’s birth, and consider releasing the Baby Bonus once an expecting mother clears the first trimester.
